Deep timber tones Meet East Village character
Located opposite the iconic Webster Hall, Moxy East Village is a 286-room hotel inspired by the changing character of its downtown New York neighborhood. Designed by Rockwell Group, the interiors reference the East Village’s art and music history through raw materials, industrial detailing and moody finishes. Matisse (HW2146) was used across both the floor and ceiling, bringing rich brown timber tones to the hotel’s distinctive public spaces.
A deep Brunette foundation
The dramatic brown tones of Matisse play an important role in establishing the atmosphere of the lobby and bar. Used across horizontal and vertical surfaces, the timber creates a strong visual connection between different areas while complementing blackened steel, reclaimed materials, ribbed glass and industrial lighting. The deep wood tones feel particularly at home within the Alphabet Bar, where the design takes inspiration from the East Village punk scene of the 1970s and 1980s.
Taking timber from floor to ceiling
Using Matisse on both the floor and ceiling demonstrates how timber can become a defining element throughout an interior rather than simply a surface underfoot. The consistent rich brown coloring helps connect the lobby, bar and lounge, while the natural grain and texture provide warmth against the more industrial elements of Rockwell Group’s design.
